Africa-Press – Botswana. The Ministry of Health is working on a number of strategies to retain nurses and avoid their massive exodus to other countries to look for greener pastures.

This was said by Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Mabuse Pule on behalf of the health minister on Monday, in response to a question during the ongoing Ntlo Ya Dikgosi meeting.

Mr Pule said the health ministry had resolved that nurses would get 15 per cent retention and 15 per cent overtime allowances as well as the 10 per cent post basic allowance aimed at retaining nurses in the public sector.

He added that a decision was also taken to increase the number of nurses taken for training.

He was responding to a question from Kgosi Esau Molehele of Ghanzi East Region, who had asked the minister if he was aware of the massive exodus of nurses to other countries to look for greener pastures.

Kgosi Molehele also wanted to know if the ministry had plans in place to retain them.
