Africa-Press – Botswana. Preparations are on course for this year’s celebration of World Press Freedom Day which is observed annually on May 3.
Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Botswana, Chairman Mr Thomas Nkhoma told that locally celebrations would be held in Gaborone, Francistown and Maun on May 6 to allow participation of all media houses across the country.
The day is observed under the theme: Shaping a future of rights: Freedom of expression as a driver for all other human rights and a number of activities planned for the day include a march and talent show.
A panel discussion will be held at the University of Botswana (UB) on May 3 under the theme: Freedom of Expression a Right for All.
Mr Nkhoma said currently they were experiencing financial hardships which should be resolved to enable them to meet the set targets.
He said already his board was faced with a P280 000 debt from the awards held in the past as they did not attract any funding.
Mr Nkhoma confirmed that financial support would aid their targeted interventions of reviving MISA Botswana. MISA’s additional member, also responsible for fundraising Ms Sharon Mathala commended Mascom for pledging P50 000 for the panel discussion. Ms Mathala stated that the panel discussion would focus on the role of media in promoting human rights in the wake of the digital revolution. Furthermore, she indicated that the celebrations have been made possible by Lucara Botswana supported by Kalahari Breweries Limited (KBL), Hospitality and Tourism Association of Botswana (HATAB), Red Cross Botswana and the Three – Chiefs Motorcycle Club who will actively partake in the scheduled march.
MISA Botswana Trustee Treasure, Ms Tsaone Basimanebotlhe mentioned that financial support remained a priority for the board adding that the institute was a non-profitable organisation which survived through sponsors and subscription fees. She urged members to embrace MISA Botswana targets and to play a role in their attainment.
