Africa-Press – Botswana. Residents of Tonota have been cautioned against vandalising the newly installed Mascom wireless tower in the village.
Tonota MP , Mr Pono Moatlhodi made the call during handing over of Mascom tower, which is part of the mobile operator’s 4G network expansion project across the country.
Mr Moatlhodi, who is also the deputy speaker of the National Assembly said vandalism was a draw back to the economy and it stalled the improvement of the living standard of Batswana.
He said the expansion of mobile wireless networks had a huge impact on the country’s economy and quality of life of Batswana.
The Tonota legislator said the expansion opened up new opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs by allowing them to reach more customers as well as to connect with suppliers and partners.
He said the expansion of mobile networks could also improve access to education, healthcare, and other essential services and reduce isolation and connect people with family and friends.
In addition, he observed that mobile telephony had in many ways improved communication and the living standard of Batswana especially in rural areas.
“It has made it easier for people to stay in touch with family and friends especially in remote areas where travel is difficult. It has also created new economic opportunities for people in rural areas, by enabling them to start small businesses and access markets that they have not yet accessed,” said Mr Moatlhodi.
He appealed to Mascom to spread its wings to remote areas such as Mabesekwa which is only covered by BTC wireless.
Speaking at the event, Mascom Acting Communications and Public Relations Head, Ms Barbara Gotlop said similar expansion had been done in other villages such as Tsabong, Mopipi, Thamaga, Maun, just to mention a few.
She said the upgrade would bring enhancement of the network where there were issues of capacity. Ms Gotlop further said it was important that Mascom moved with speed to catch up with the ever changing technology and take its customers with it on the innovative future driven journey.
“Our aim is to improve communications network across the country and put Botswana first when it comes to advanced technology,” she added.
Ms Gotlop said Mascom was committed and would continue to improve its networks to have the widest coverage in Botswana and reach more people.
Earlier on in his welcome remarks, Kgosi Bokamoso Radipitse of Tonota commended Mascom for the project, saying such projects were crucial to the development of the human life.
