Africa-Press – Botswana. Pugilist, Lethabo Modukanele, scooped the Sportswoman of the Year title at the inaugural Botswana Women in Sports Awards in Gaborone on Saturday.

The prolific woman boxer received a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games last year.

Modukanele, who won P20 000, was nominated for the award with tennis player, Ekua Youri and Aobakwe Modise of fencing.

The honor was bestowed on her in absentia as she was out of the country where she participated at the Women’s World Boxing Championships in New Delhi, India last week.

Another big winner was Neo Gabontshwe, who received the Sportswoman of the Year with Disability.

She managed to fend off fellow athletes Tsholofelo Madome and Bokang Mopalo to grab the P20 000 prize.

Team of the Year Award went to Lawn Bowls Team that took part in the 2022 World Singles Champion of Championships and the 2022 Quadrangular Lawn Bowls Tournament.

Anastacia Sibanda, a sports writer with Department Information Services (BOPA), was chosen as the Sports Journalist of the Year – print and also received CEO’s special award meant to recognise and promote female sport excellence.

Inside BW Woman’s Magazine chief executive officer, Kesego Okie, explained that performance was judged from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2022, adding that selection of winners was done by a panel of judges from various sectors.

Okie said ‘we believe that it is essential to recognise and reward the hard work and dedication of female athletes, coaches, administrators and everyone else having a significant contribution and impact on the development and growth of women in sport.’

She further commended sponsors who heeded to the call for their generous support alluding this would go a long way in increasing the much needed visibility of women in sport.

Umpire of the Year – Dorothy Okatch

Administrator of the Year – Tshepiso Lopang

Photographer of the Year – Kennedy Ramokone

Young and Promising Athlete of the Year – Kutlo Kesiilwe

Courage Award – Magdeline Moyengwa.
