It is Setswana culture to condole with those who have lost their loved ones with the intention to help wipe away the tears of the bereaved, says President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi.

Offering his condolences to the Mokobi family that lost their mother in March this year, President Masisi commended the widower, Mr Charles Mokobi, for longevity in marriage to his departed wife, Ms Kesitegile Mokobi.

He said the long period that Mr and Ms Mokobi’s marriage endured should be exemplary to their children and anyone who sought inspiration.

“It is in our culture to convey messages of condolences to those who lost their loved ones,” he said, adding that people spent time with them so that they did not feel alone while helping to shine the light on their dark days.

President Masisi hailed the departed Ms Mokobi as a support structure to Mr Mokobi, a commissioner during the 2022 presidential commission of inquiry into the review of the Constitution.

“You succeeded with her support and we’d like to thank you for your service and encourage you to stay strong,” he said.

The late Ms Mokobi died after a long illness in Gaborone. She was described as a confident, strong-willed, hardworking and responsible woman.

A graduate of the University of Botswana in library and information services, Ms Mokobi was described as a dynamic leader by her colleagues at Botswana National Library Services.

She is survived by her husband, nine children and 15 grandchildren.
