Africa-Press – Botswana. Government departments should do away with regional offices to facilitate timely and better service delivery, Minister of Transport and Public Works, Mr Eric Molale has said.

Speaking at a Kgotla meeting in Khudumelapye recently, Mr Molale said the issue of one officer overseeing a range of districts was outdated.

He said through the establishment of fully fledged districts, government was moving away from the arrangement in which one officer was expected to be in charge of more districts.

In principle, Mr Molale said no officer should oversee more than one district to make decentralisation feasible. He said the word regional officers should cease to be part of government vocabulary.

He also called on government departments to bring services closer to the people, though Bringing Services to the People initiative.

Kgosi Tuelo Ramokobetwana of Khudumelapye called on government to consider establishing a special education unit in Khudumelapye Primary School, saying that there were pupils with special needs in the school.

In addition, the traditional leader said there should be trained teachers to be in charge of the special education unit.

The move, she said would help pupils with special needs reach their full potential because trained staff would be dedicated to them and the learning environment would be conducive.

Meanwhile, Village Development Committee chairperson for Khudumelapye, Ms Talelo Dinoge said there was dire shortage of accommodation for government employees.

She added that even the available accommodation was in deteriorating state.
