Africa-Press – Botswana. After a year-long wait without a new queen, talented local actress, Palesa Molefe was crowned Miss Botswana 2021-2022 last Saturday at Limkokwing Hall of Fame.
Molefe beat 15 other beautiful contestants on the night to win the coveted crown, which includes among others the top prize of a Mercedes Benz C200 courtesy of new car dealer, Magariland. It was a tough decision for the judges who included among others Miss World 2010 first princess Emma Wareus. However, in the end, the name Molefe stood out after excelling through rounds of swimsuit and evening gown struts, questions on social issues and one final chance to explain why she should be the next Miss Botswana. “I would love to be the next Miss Botswana because I want to be part of a team in Botswana that wants to make a change.
I understand that being Miss Botswana is having a crown but I am part of a bigger organisation. I want to be that person or lady who gets honoured enough to get the crown and be supported by every one of you,” answered Molefe. She became the first woman in the history of the pageant to win with a bald head, an acknowledgement of black beauty on the international stage. Two runners-up Michelle Bagoleng and Marang Makhoana won the first and second princess titles respectively.
In an interview with Showtime after being crowned queen, the beautiful and intelligent Molefe said the first thing she would do is to come together as a team to strategize ahead of the Miss World pageant later this year. “I am coming into this with my project, but I am part of a bigger project.
My project is focussing on mental health for children through teachers,” she said. She said winning the title means everything to her and one thing that was close to her heart was inclusivity and representation. The Star drama series leading actress said she believes her background speaks volumes in representing what a young Motswana child can look up to. “I am happy, honoured and thankful for the support that I have been getting from Batswana from day one. I want any child who has any dreams to know that it is possible,” she highlighted. She said after the top three was announced on the night she knew that there was going to be moments when things would be very intense and emotions heightened. Molefe said holding hands with the other contestants during the final stages showed that there is support even among the competition. Molefe takes over the Miss Botswana crown from Oweditse Phirinyane who has been holding the crown since 2019. Molefe will now set her sights on the Miss World crown. Miss World 2021 will be held on December 16, 2021, at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
