Africa-Press – Botswana. Morupule Wanderers coach, Agang Mogotsi was not too happy with the lack of sharpness up-front by his boys, despite emerging with maximum points away to Union Flamengo Santos on Sunday in an FNB Premiership encounter,
With Wanderers having netted four goals in their first game of the year against Gaborone United, many expected them to have it easy against a Santos side languishing at the bottom of the table.
Mogotsi could therefore be forgiven for feeling that they could have done better than the scrappy solitary goal through Baboloki Makhura, especially in the first half when they had more control of the game.
“Before recess, we could have gotten one or two more goals and that would have made things easier for us in the second half,” he said.
He added that looking at the precarious position that Santos is in, he was not surprised though to see them putting up a fight in the second half.
“They came back strong and put us on the back-foot, but credit to my boys for defending the box very well under all that pressure,” he said.
He said that as the league heats up, they will have to dice with using tried and tested players for better chances of a win, and new players to avoid fatigue.
Santos gaffer, Thaloba Nthaga, said his team was more cautious in the first half to minimise conceding, which might have totally killed their spirit.
“It was more a matter of caution in the first half, but in the second half we came back very strong and made a lot of forward runs, which were lacking in the first half,” he said.
He said being cautious was reasonable looking at the fact that the team has conceded a lot in the past games. Nthaga said the way his boys handled the second half, especially late on, would have been justified by at least a draw.
He, however, said all his team needs is to keep on believing and that bringing fresh players into the team would also help.
“This will hopefully bring more competition as players fight for positions, but with what I saw today we are not far off the mark,” he said.
Santos have only scored four goals in 14 games and conceded 36 times. They are yet to register a win inn the league, together with Chadibe FC.
