Africa-Press – Botswana. Mothers play an essential role in nurturing children and as change-makers in the community, Molepolole South MP, Mr Kabo Morwaeng has said.
In recognition of this, Mr Morwaeng, who is also the Minister for State President, on Saturday hosted mothers in his constituency to celebrate them.
“It is important to empower women holding leadership roles because by teaching them, were are teaching the nation,” he said.
He called on the mothers who participated in the event to cascade to their friends and others in their respective dikgotla and churches, saying the lessons learnt should help improve their lives.
Mr Morwaeng also urged women to encourage one another and to have hope that despite the challenges they faced, they would emerge victorious.
He further said government had several programmes aimed at empowering women as they had previously been disadvantaged.
He encouraged the girl-child to know that she had unlimited opportunities and could be whatever she wanted to be.
Mr Morwaeng called upon the mothers to nurture their children, support them and raise them to be responsible citizens, adding that they should not leave all the responsibilities to teachers.
Gender affairs director, Ms Thapelo Phuthego, encouraged women to utilise government economic empowerment schemes to improve their lives. She said the CEDA guidelines introduced during the peak of COVID-19 had made it easier for women to access finance at favourable rates.
Ms Phuthego further said there were various businesses that women could venture into such as knitting since handmade crafts were in demand.She further said government working with UN women had developed a training programme for women in business.
Women were taught how to start their businesses, to know the type of businesses they ventured into and how to expand them, she said.
For her part, Ms Phondy Morwaeng, wife of MP, said they organised the event to celebrate mothers including those who had adopted their communities.
She said Molepolole women had agreed that their village’s destiny was in their hands, hence taking the lead to ensure that it was glorified.
