Africa-Press – Botswana. Construction of the 33 km Motopi-Makalamabedi road is under way.

Giving progress update during the site tour in Motopi on Wednesday, resident engineer, Mr Mosupi Moile said the project had been funded to the tune of P264 million.

He stated that the project duration was 18 months, further noting that there were about 34 homesteads and fields that have been affected by the road construction.

Mr Moile, however, noted that all the concerned homesteads and fields have been relocated with the majority of the owners compensated.

The project was awarded to Estate Construction on November 20, 2023 and the official signing ceremony was on February 6, 2024 whilst commencement was on February 20.

He said commencement of the project began with construction of the campsite for the engineer and they opted to use bricks as opposed to prefabricated material.

He said challenges experienced was lack of accommodation, water and soil used for road construction.

Estate Construction representative Mr Julius Swapo stated that construction of the camp site would take four to five months.

Mr Swapo said they have exposed all the Water Utilities Corporation pipelines and locked them, indicating they would soon be relocated after negotiations with the WUC.

He noted that bush clearing had been done up to 15 kilometres.
