Africa-Press – Botswana. Leaders of trade unions have been called to embody selflessness and determination in their advocacy for workers’ rights.

Speaking at International Workers Day celebration held in Letlhakeng, Assistant Minister of Water and Human Settlement, Mr Motsamai Motsamai emphasised the importance of prioritising workers’ rights above personal interests, warning that any deviation could betray the struggle for justice and render their efforts meaningless.

“Extend your voice and support to other workers, including those in domestic roles and employees of security companies,” said Mr Motsamai, urging union leaders to advocate not only for their members but for all workers facing challenges.

Mr Motsamai reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving working conditions across the board and urged union leaders to exercise patience as these enhancements were implemented. He also spoke on the right of workers to engage in peaceful demonstrations when aggrieved. This, he said actions, provided essential feedback for introspection.

Mr Tebogo Kemohitlhetse, an executive member of the National Amalgamated Central, Local and Parastatal Manual Workers’ Union, called for urgent reforms, insisting that the government must act swiftly to enhance working conditions.

He stressed that issues regarding work environments should be resolved at the bargaining council rather than in Parliament.
