Africa-Press – Botswana. Mowana Junior Secondary School in Mahalapye hosted a career fair for form twos and threes to equip them with life skills.
Speaking during the career fair themed: Exploring the World of Work: Dream Big Go Global recently, the school head, Mr Kenneth Maungwa advised learners to expose themselves to the world of work.
He said given the chance to explore and exploit career paths, they were spoiled for choice and therefore it was imperative to know which subjects were needed in order to achieve their dreams.
He said the event presented an opportunity for awareness and also created a platform for asking questions that would assist them make better choices or decisions pertaining to their career paths.
Moreover, he said it was an opportunity to interact with different organisations and acquire as much information as possible on what they offer.
In addition, Mr Maungwa said the event was an investment opportunity to their future plans and get as much contacts as possible that would benefit them in the future.
For his part, Mahalapye Prisons Assistant Superintendent, Ms Mpoloka Maseko said it was critical for learners to attend such career fairs to expose themselves to the world of work.
“The whole purpose of us being here is to equip you with life skills and knowledge to be able to face threats, strengths, opportunities, realities and weaknesses as well as for self-consciousness,” she said.
Furthermore, Ms Maseko said career fair gave pupils information pertaining to their future.
“Confidence to tackle issues head on was also enhanced due to career fairs as they point to the direction to take and usually lead to better decisions and choices,” said Ms Maseko.
She said career fairs created a platform for learners to explore employment and career opportunities that they would otherwise never had.
Ms Maseko said a tree was tamed while still young, pointing such would give learners a better chance to make informed decisions at a tender age that would make them the best version of themselves.
Ms Rachel Molapisi, an entrepreneur owning textile and milling businesses, said not all would be absorbed by tertiary institutions and therefore advised them to seize the opportunity to acquire applicable information on the business model they wished to undertake to create jobs for themselves and others.
