Africa-Press – Botswana. The Member of Parliament (MP) for Serowe South, Mr Leepetswe Lesedi has urged church leaders to address the rising issue of social ills, which have caused destruction to property and loss of lives through violence.
MP Lesedi was the guest speaker at a pastors’ graduation ceremony in Serowe recently themed: A Leader With a Difference in a Church Set-up,” organised by Uphill English School based in Palapye. The ceremony celebrated graduates who completed a course in Christian Leadership and Management, led by the school director, Mr Seoko Ramagala.
MP Lesedi highlighted the alarming rise of gender-based violence (GBV), stating that it permeates various social structures, including social clubs, businesses, homes, and even churches.
“I urge the church leadership to address social ills in the church and society at large to amplify the voice of the church,” he said.
He urged the graduates to guard themselves and the churches they lead to be always vigilant and alert against issues of fraud and money laundering associated with some churches in the country.
Mr Lesedi also cautioned the new graduates to protect their churches from vulnerabilities associated with fraud and money laundering, which he noted have become concerns for some religious institutions in the country. He urged them to ensure their churches comply with national laws and to pursue their mission without fear of law enforcement interference.
He congratulated the eight graduates, acknowledging their dedication and perseverance, particularly noting that some had been spreading the gospel long before earning their certificates.
Mr Ramagala, indicated plans for the establishment of a new school headquarters in Serowe but voiced challenges regarding the lack of available land. He appealed to the government for assistance in securing plots designated for worship.
