Africa-Press – Botswana. Thousands of Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) supporters and well wishers, both young and old, thronged the National Stadium on Saturday evening to celebrate the party’s victory in the just ended general elections.
They were joined by President Duma Boko and other high ranking party officials and treated to a fun-filled night featuring remarkable performances by some local and South African artistes.
Some of the performers included Makhadzi, Dalom Kids, DJ Fresh, Culture Spears, Charma Girl as well as Han-C, Kabelo Tiro aka Skavenja and Naisi Boy.
The victory party ended in the wee hours of Sunday and was organised by the UDC to thank Batswana for voting the party in large numbers.
The UDC managed to unseat the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) after 58 years in power to become the ruling party with 36 of the 61 elected Members of Parliament.
Addressing a press conference recently, UDC policy and strategy committee member, Dr Patrick Molutsi said the seats surpassed the target that the party had hoped to win.
He noted that the UDC captured 37 per cent of the popular vote while the Botswana Congress Party and BDP attained 30 per cent and 24 per cent respectively. The celebrations will be held in all the districts across the country.
