Africa-Press – Botswana. Former president and Kgosikgolo of Bangwato tribe, Ian Khama says he will consider forgiving Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) depending on the contents of the opposition party’s apology.
The BDP, a party he quit because of his fallout with his successor former president Mokgweetsi Masisi, last week revealed that a BDP delegation will visit Serowe next week to apologise to Khama and Bangwato.
According to the new leadership of the BDP led by Mpho Balopi: “upon reflection of the new BDP leadership, we strongly believe that when Bangwato wanted to deliberate on the issues that surrounded their Kgosikgolo, the BDP government of the time refused them the use of their kgotla. We accept that this was not only wrong and regrettable, but an affront to the traditions and culture of not only Bangwato but of Batswana as a nation.”
Answering to questions about the apology Khama said, “They must feel free to present whatever they want to without conditions. Of course there could be some in the meeting who may want certain conditions for them to be able to accept any apology but for now there aren’t any.”
Asked if BDP had engaged him about their intention, Khama said “yes, they came to me to ask if we they could do that.” Asked if he could consider a BDP return, Khama firmly stated “I have stated that it would not be appropriate to indicate my position with any political party publicly.”
