Africa-Press – Botswana. Vice President Ndaba Nkosinathi Gaolathe has emphasized that democracy, though imperfect, remains the most powerful idea humanity has ever created. He said it is an idea that insists every life, every voice, and every conscience has equal worth.
He was speaking at the Fredrick-Erbet Stiftung Gaborone Democracy Lab held at Avani Hotel under the theme “Democratic Institutions Must Deliver Again.” The theme provided an opportunity to reflect on whether democratic institutions still serve and inspire the people they were built to represent.
The Vice President noted that Botswana crossed a historic threshold last November when the country witnessed a peaceful change of government after 58 years of independence. He said this transition was achieved through the will of the people, expressed at the ballot box, and through the strength of democracy itself.
Mr. Gaolathe stated that Botswana’s story was not one of political victory or defeat but rather a reflection of the maturity of its people, the resilience of its institutions, and the quiet triumph of the democratic ideal. He reminded the audience that the true test of democracy does not end at the polling booth but begins the morning after the election, when governance, accountability, and service to citizens must take center stage.
He added that as Botswana navigates this new chapter under a new government, the nation must recognize that democracy does not exist in isolation. The global economy, the climate emergency, and regional instability all influence and shape the democratic space.
According to Mr. Gaolathe, the task ahead is to ensure that democracy not only survives but performs in this new world. This means ensuring that freedom and development move together, that human rights and human needs complement each other, and that reason guides progress.
He concluded by reaffirming Botswana’s vision to become the best-managed economy in Africa, a nation defined by unity, fairness, and inclusive prosperity. Through collaboration, innovation, and steadfast commitment to democratic principles, Botswana aims to strengthen its institutions and inspire renewed trust in governance.
