New Chapter in Global Agriculture IFFCO Nano Lands in Botswana

Africa-Press – Botswana. In a landmark event signalling deepening Indo-Africa agricultural ties, Botswana’s President Duma Boko formally launched the nano fertiliser programme developed by IFFCO, marking a historic milestone for the Indian cooperative and a major leap for Botswana’s farming sector.

“For IFFCO, already celebrated globally for its cooperative reach and innovations, the launch is a profound honour… another global feather added to our cap. Beyond symbolism, this moment reflects the growing role of nano-fertiliser technology in reshaping agriculture across continents”, said IFFCO MD K J Patel in a tweet.

The new programme, implemented via a partnership between Botswana-based firm Lone Trends (also referred in some sources as Lone Threads), IFFCO and the country’s National Agricultural Research and Development Institute (NARDI), introduces advanced nano fertiliser technology adapted to Botswana’s soil and climatic conditions.

By enabling local production, the initiative promises to improve cost-effectiveness and accessibility. Officials say the nano fertilisers offer efficient nutrient delivery even in smaller doses, which can increase yields, reduce reliance on imported chemical fertilisers, and promote food sovereignty in Botswana.Complementing production, the plan includes training for farmers to ensure proper adoption and uptake, underlining the country’s commitment to building resilient, sustainable agriculture systems.

The Botswana launch comes at a moment of strong momentum for IFFCO’s nano fertiliser business. In the financial year 2024–25, IFFCO sold 365.09 lakh bottles of nano fertilisers, a 47% increase over the previous year, driven by robust demand for its liquid Nano Urea Plus and Nano DAP.

Domestically in India, IFFCO has been expanding its production facilities: two recently commissioned plants in Uttar Pradesh now produce Nano DAP Liquid, boosting total production capacity to 9.5 lakh bottles per day across five nano-fertiliser units.

Moreover, IFFCO’s push for nano fertilisers aligns with larger national efforts toward sustainable and efficient farming: widespread awareness campaigns, subsidies (e.g. 25% subsidy for farmers in selected “nano villages”), and use of agri-drones to spray nano fertilisers and bio-inputs have been central to the rollout.

For India’s cooperative movement, this development represents a giant stride forward. IFFCO, once a domestic player, is now exporting its innovative fertiliser technology globally and helping shape modern agriculture abroad. The Botswana launch stands as a vivid example of Sahkar Se Samriddhi, “prosperity through cooperation.”

That spirit of cooperative strength turning into global impact resonates with IFFCO’s broader identity. The cooperative has been ranked among the top in the world for its contribution to GDP per capita, an acknowledgment of how collective action can lead to large-scale economic and social change.

In Botswana’s soils, in Indian fields, and across borders and oceans, the IFFCO nano fertiliser initiative is proving that when innovation meets cooperation, the results can be transformative.
