Africa-Press – Botswana. While the recent rise in Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in China has drawn media attention, there is no cause for widespread panic.

A press release from Ministry of Health, assures the public that the situation in China is being closely monitored through global reporting mechanisms on a daily basis and the ministry has committed to informing the public about any changes in disease trends that may occur.

“It is important to note that this illness has not been declared a disease of public health concern by any international health body; hence this release is to reassure the public in view of the media headlines circulating that may cause unnecessary public unease,” says the release.

The ministry further explains that while HMPV can cause illness, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly and those with compromised immunity, it is generally manageable with proper care and hygiene practices.

As a precaution, the ministry urges the public to enhance their hygiene practices such as handwashing with soap and clean water, covering their mouth with the elbow when coughing, and optional use of masks when experiencing flu-like symptoms especially in crowded areas.

HMPV is a respiratory virus typically associated with symptoms of the common cold such as cough, fever, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, wheezing and shortness of breath amongst others. Transmission of this infection is likely to be similar to that of other flu-like illnesses.
