Africa-Press – Botswana. There are no water rights issued in communal areas at the Chobe Enclave specifically for provision of water to wild animals.
Answering a question in Parliament, the Minister of Water and Human Settlement, Mr Onneetse Ramogapi said a total of 25 water rights had been issued in the Chobe Enclave for domestic, tourism and irrigation use. Of these, he said only one water right was allocated for tourism. Notwithstanding this, the minister said there were 23 boreholes drilled and operational in the Chobe National Park to provide water for wildlife by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks. He said the drilling of these boreholes was intended to reduce human-wildlife conflict by providing alternative sources of water for wildlife. Mr Ramogapi was responding to a question from Chobe MP Mr Simasiku Mapulanga who had asked the minister to state the number of permits that have been issued in communal areas at the Chobe Enclave for provision of water to wild animals and the names of companies given the permits.
