Africa-Press – Botswana. North East District has registered 29 in the second quarter compared to 38 in the previous one.
Cases of teenage pregnancies, defilement, rape and negligence are said to be on the rise in district.
This was said by the Principal district officer, Ms Omphile Mogorosi.
Addressing North East District councillors this week, she said two of the cases involved teenagers under 15 years compared to zero in the previous quarter.
She said by the end of June this year 155 cases were registered and that 73 were of defilement, 30 for rape, 15 children in need of protection, four child trafficking and five of negligence.
On registered trusts in the district, she said there were 10 community based organisations.
Regarding illegal immigrants, she said over 1 000 were arrested for entering the country through un-gazetted points and that all were fined over P80 000.
She also said there were six cases of harbouring illegal immigrants.
On the upgrading of the Tshesebe to Masunga road to bitumen standard, she said the completion date had been extended to October 23 this year due to delays caused by rain and a high water table at the main road.
She noted that the Tshesebe-Masunga road was 88 per cent complete.
An official from ChildLine Botswana, Ms Seitebatso Kegakilwe said there were five residential places of safety for children and that they accommodated 543 children who had been abused or neglected.
She said over 18 000 orphans were registered as at end of June and that two per cent of them were heading households.
She said over 37 000 more were vulnerable children because of other factors.
