Africa-Press – Botswana. Youth in the Okavango District have been encouraged to consider careers beyond tourism.

This was said by the Nkashi Trust manager, Mr Chillie Motshusi at a career fair that was held in Beetsha yesterday. The career fair organised by the Nkashi Trust targeted students from schools in Okavango and the general community.

Mr Motshusi said the career fair, which brought together service providers from different government, private and institutions, was aimed at exposing the youth and community to a wide range of career opportunities. He said most Okavango children leaned towards careers in tourism as their area is rich in natural resources that supported the tourism industry.

Mr Motshusi said it was imperative for young people to learn about other possible careers. He said the career fair, which was on its first year, was supported by Okavango Eternal, a partnership between National Geographic Society and De Beers Group, which is dedicated to protecting the source waters of the Okavango Delta and supporting sustainable livelihoods of community members across Botswana, Namibia and Angola. He said Okavango Eternal not only aims at safeguarding the delta but also empowers local communities hence the career fair.

In his remarks, the keynote speaker, a journalist from Botswana Television, Mr Goboletsemang Boitshwarelo motivated the young people to have determination to achieve their goals in life. Mr Boitshwarelo said it was important for a person to identify the career of their choice and pursue it by seeking relevant information and mentors.

“Research about the skills required for the job you desire”, he advised.

Mr Boitshwarelo said it was significant for someone to do a job they were passionate about since that would help a person to hold on even if they face challenges along the way. Lastly, he urged the youth to refrain from alcohol and drugs, to be respectful, to align to their faith and be presentable at all times.

A student from Shakawe Senior Secondary School, Ms Nonhle Gobusamang expressed gratitude to the Nkashi Trust for providing an insightful platform for students on career paths. An out of school youth, Ms Sorrow Motholwa appreciated the career fair saying it has motivated her to advance her learning.
