Africa-Press – Botswana. Some beneficiaries of destitute and RADP housing programmes at Bere settlement are said to be renting out houses they benefitted from the programmes, while others sell food baskets handouts issued by council.
This was revealed by Bere Village Development Committee vice chairperson, Ms Annah Mangongorego during a kgotla meeting addressed by Ghanzi South MP, Mr Motsamai Motsamai recently.
She condemned the behaviour, which she said defeated government efforts to ensure that beneficiaries lived dignified lives.
She said since some destitute and RADP housing beneficiaries started renting out houses, demand for destitute and RADP housing was high, adding that the list of people who wanted to benefit from that programme had gone up.
Responding to the concern an official from Ghanzi council Mr Moses Maphane pleaded with the community to desist from such actions.
He said if indeed they were deserving beneficiaries and in need of assistance afforded to them by council they should not be doing such acts, and adding that those buying from the beneficiaries were also in the wrong.
MP Motsamai condemned those selling food rations and warned that they risked being blacklisted because their actions showed that they were undeserving beneficiaries. He said some even trade food rations for alcohol.
He also cautioned destitute and RADP housing beneficiaries not to rent out houses they benefitted from the programmes.
The MP informed residents that satellite police stations were planned for West Hanahai and Chobokwane.
