Africa-Press – Botswana. Team C from Selebi Phikwe Bowling Club scored nine points and a 22 shot difference to claim the Francistown Major Bowls Tournament for the second consecutive year on Saturday.
The winning team comprising George Kieni, Lebogang Mascarenhas, Susan Gaofhiwe and Modisaotsile Mphotho produced an impressive bowling skills which saw them triumph over teams from Gaborone, Francistown, Orapa, and Jwaneng.
They collected P4 000 first prize and a trophy for their efforts.
Team A from the Francistown Bowling Club finished second, also on nine points but with a 20-shot difference, followed in third position by Team A from Selebi Phikwe with seven points and a 22-shot difference.
The tournament also highlighted the inspiring performance of 81-year-old Violet Wheatley from Francistown Bowling Club.
Although retired, she returned to bolster her struggling team, demonstrating remarkable skills and proving that age is no barrier to talent.
Additionally, Botswana Bowling Association representative Marea Modutlwa recently nominated to the World Bowling’s Athletic Commission, announced plans for an annual tournament to honour fallen legends of the association.
She said the tournament would rotate annually among participating teams.
Meanwhile, the Botswana Bowling Association (BBA) will send a 10-member youth team of five U25 and five U17 players to compete in the South Africa National Youth Championship in Bloemfontein from March 29-April 1.
The U25 team comprises Thabo Makopa, Edwin Nyoka and Kaone Maroku of Orapa Bowling Club, as well as Mighty Morwaagole and Tshepo Maphane of Jwaneng Bowling Club.
The U17 team has Jordan Davis of Gaborone Bowling Club, as well as Gabriel Maphane, Gideon Leseka, Thabile Keorotse and Chantell Moemele of Jwaneng Bowling Club.
