Africa-Press – Botswana. Councillors Sonny Phiri and Mr Peter Sethibe have been voted as the first chairperson and deputy chairperson respectively of the newly established Moshupa District Council.

The new district was formerly a sub-district under the Southern District Council until April 1.

Mr Phiri is the former deputy and Chairperson of the Southern District Council, while his deputy, Councillor Sethibe was the Chairperson of Moshupa sub-district Council.

Both councillors were unopposed for the positions.

In his acceptance speech, the chairperson thanked all the councillors for electing him and his deputy to the positions.

He assured them that his office would work closely with all stakeholders to develop the district. “We all have one common goal, to develop the district. I therefore appeal for teamwork in an effort to attain our goal,” he added.

For his part, Councillor Sethibe shared Mr Phiri sentiments that it was important for all councillors and stakeholders to join hands towards development of the district.Mr Sethibe highlighted the need for the council to find new ways of generating revenue.

He thanked councillors for the vote, noting that it showed their confidence in him.
