Africa-Press – Botswana. A goalless draw against Untouchable on Saturday, was enough for Police XI ladies football team to gain promotion to the Gaborone Region Division 1.

In a post-match interview, Police XI coach, Ernest Olebile said gaining promotion after two seasons in the lower division was an achievement that could not be ignored for a team, which was formed in 2022.

Olebile said unity and resilience among the players, management, supporters and technical commitment contributed immensely to their feat.

He said he was aware of the tough competition at Division 1, hence there was a need to beef up the squad.

“We will stamp our authority at Division 1. Our intension is to compete.

Honestly, we are not going there to only add numbers, we know what it takes to win the games to remain in the league and avoid relegation,” he said.

Despite finishing on a high note and gaining promotion, Olebile said the season had its own challenges as in some instances the league had to be halted due to non-availability of playgrounds and match officials.

Team captain Obusitse Mosoboki said the team worked hard in the past season as their aim was not to stay for long at Division 2.

Their target, she said was to get maximum points in all their initial matches of the season without fail.

She said the team achieved its target hence getting promoted to the elite division of the women football league.

She said she was happy to be leading a united team of women who were committed to the cause.

“We know that playing in Division 1 will not be a child’s play.

We are equally ready. When we joined Division 2, we were told it is not going to be easy but we spent only two seasons there, look where we are,” she said.

Township Rollers ladies team also gained promotion to the higher league after finishing atop with 41 points followed by Police XI with 38 points from 25 games played.

Rollers solidified their position after beating Royal GFA Ladies 7-0 at Lekidi.

In other games played on Saturday Ginomai beat relegation-bound Geronah 5-4, FC Legend were beaten 4-1 by Vicomates.
