Africa-Press – Botswana. President Advocate Duma Boko says there is need to mend the strained relationship between Botswana and De Beers, attributing the challenges to the way negotiations were conducted.

In his address at a packed BTV auditorium following his swearing-in on Friday, President Boko said the first critical step in resolving the issue was to engage in open dialogue that acknowledges the concerns of both parties.

Adv Boko underlined the importance of addressing commercial issues thoughtfully, calling for civility and respect particularly in that such matters often attracted international media attention which could impact investor confidence.

Acknowledging Botswana’s integration into the global market, he pledged to cultivate an environment that bolstered investor confidence and reflected the country’s commitment to stability and growth.

In relation to democracy, President Boko celebrated Botswana’s peaceful transition of power, contrasting it with the instability in nations where leaders refused to concede defeat.

He highlighted Botswana’s exemplary democratic values, noting that all political parties campaigned freely and that the election process was conducted without disruption.

He said he took pride in standing before the public as demonstration to Botswana’s democratic values and commended the former ruling party’s acceptance of the electorate’s decision after 58 years in power.

President Boko expressed gratitude to former President, Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi, who, during the election process, assured him of his commitment to respect the outcome and facilitate a seamless transition of power.

Dr Masisi fulfilled this promise, demonstrating Botswana’s dedication to democracy and unity.

Adv.Boko affirmed that his governance would be centred on the people’s needs, calling on Batswana to guide him as he leads with their aspirations in mind.

Underlining the key role of citizen participation in the democratic process, he urged for unity and collaboration across the nation.

He pledged to serve as a President for all, transcending party lines, with a commitment to equitable development across every region to ensure that no community was left behind.

In his vision for Botswana’s future, President Boko aims to empower citizens through various initiatives that prioritise an economy that rewarded its people.

His goal is to foster a journey of shared prosperity and inclusiveness, engaging the entire nation as he works toward a united and flourishing Botswana.
