Africa-Press – Botswana. President Advocate Duma Boko has paid tribute to Dr Matshidiso Moeti for her outstanding contribution to strengthening Africa’s health systems during her tenure as the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa. Dr Moeti, who recently retired from the position after two impactful terms, paid a courtesy call on President Boko at the Office of the President.

During their meeting, President Boko acknowledged Dr Moeti’s unwavering dedication to public health and her leadership during some of the continent’s most challenging times, including the Ebola outbreaks and the COVID-19 pandemic. He noted that her visionary leadership helped shape critical health policies, strengthen regional cooperation, and build resilient healthcare systems across Africa.

“Dr Moeti’s legacy is one of bold leadership, collaboration, and an unshakable commitment to improving the lives of African people,” said President Boko. “Her efforts have helped lay a foundation for a healthier continent, and we remain deeply grateful for her service.”

Dr Moeti made history as the first woman to hold the position of WHO Regional Director for Africa. She was initially elected in 2015 and served two terms, during which she spearheaded several transformative health initiatives focused on maternal and child health, infectious disease control, universal health coverage, and health workforce development. Her leadership during the COVID-19 crisis was widely recognised for promoting equitable vaccine distribution and strengthening emergency preparedness across member states.

Reflecting on her visit, Dr Moeti expressed her appreciation to Botswana for its support during her tenure and reiterated her continued commitment to supporting public health development in Africa even after retirement. She commended Botswana’s efforts in healthcare innovation and inclusive policy development.

President Boko emphasized that Dr Moeti’s retirement marks not just the end of a distinguished career, but the beginning of a new chapter in mentorship, advocacy, and knowledge sharing for future leaders in public health. He also highlighted the importance of honoring African professionals whose contributions continue to elevate the continent on the global stage.

Dr Moeti’s visit and recognition by President Boko underscore Botswana’s strong commitment to health sector leadership and its role in advancing Africa’s health agenda. As Africa looks to the future, her legacy will continue to inspire progress and innovation in building a healthier, more resilient continent.
