President Duma Boko Launches Traffic Control Centre

Africa-Press – Botswana. Tuesday morning marked a major step in Botswana’s drive to modernise urban transport and improve road safety. President Advocate Duma Gideon Boko officially inaugurated the Traffic Signals Modernization and Centralized Traffic Control Centre, known as the CTCC.

The launch signals a clear shift toward smarter traffic management in Gaborone and surrounding areas. The project covers Gaborone, Tlokweng, Mmopane, Metsimotlhabe, Ramotswa and parts of Kgatleng. These areas continue to grow rapidly, placing pressure on existing road networks and traffic systems.

The Centralized Traffic Control project was designed to address rising traffic congestion and road safety risks. It introduces modern traffic signal technology and a single command centre to manage traffic flow across the region. The goal is simple. Reduce congestion. Improve travel times. Protect road users.

Speaking at the inauguration, President Boko said the project reflects the Government’s commitment to public safety and efficient transport systems. He stressed that the CTCC strengthens emergency preparedness and improves coordination across critical services.

The Control Centre is equipped with advanced technology that allows real time monitoring and management of traffic across the network. It also supports enforcement of traffic regulations, helping authorities respond quickly to incidents and violations.

President Boko explained that the CTCC will serve as the core of emergency response operations. The centre brings together the police, fire services, emergency medical services, public health authorities, transport departments and other key stakeholders. Housing these services under one roof ensures faster and coordinated responses during emergencies and disasters.

He noted that the centre goes beyond traffic control. It functions as a national intelligence platform that will influence transport policy and urban planning for years to come. The system collects and analyses data that helps planners understand traffic patterns and future infrastructure needs.

President Boko said the information generated by the CTCC will also support decision making by law enforcement officers and courts. Accurate data will enable quicker case handling and improve accountability within the traffic enforcement system.

The Traffic Signals Modernization and Centralized Traffic Control Centre represents a long term investment in safer roads and smarter cities. It positions Botswana to manage urban growth more effectively while protecting lives and improving daily movement for commuters, pedestrians and emergency services.

The launch reinforces the Government’s focus on technology driven solutions that respond to current challenges while preparing the country for future urban demands.
