President Advocate Duma Boko today presided over the swearing in of Judicial Service Commissioners Grace Muzila and Kabo Motswagole, whose nomination came through the Law Society of Botswana. The ceremony marked an important step in strengthening the country’s justice system.
In his address, President Boko underscored the central role of the Judicial Service Commission in ensuring the integrity and effectiveness of Botswana’s judiciary. He said the appointment of judges requires careful consideration, as judges must embody values, wisdom, and jurisprudence that guide society. According to him, the calibre of judges directly influences the nation’s legal framework and overall progress.
The President commended the Law Society of Botswana for its continued commitment to upholding professional standards and for contributing to the selection of capable commissioners. He also acknowledged the judiciary’s reform efforts, which are focused on improving efficiency and accessibility in service delivery.
Quoting notable legal scholars, President Boko called for ongoing dialogue on the qualities that define a judge. He stressed the importance of striking a balance between judicial conservatism and progressiveness, noting that this balance is critical to maintaining the credibility and relevance of the courts.
Following the administration of the oath of office, Muzila and Motswagole officially assumed their duties as members of the Judicial Service Commission. They will now contribute to safeguarding the rule of law and supporting the fair administration of justice in Botswana.
