Africa-Press – Botswana. President Advocate Duma Boko has officially sworn in the newly appointed Botswana Defence Force (BDF) Commander, General Mpho Mophuting, and his Deputy, Lieutenant General Joseph Seelo. The ceremony, held yesterday morning at the Office of the President, marked a historic milestone for the country’s military leadership.

During the swearing-in and ceremonial pinning of ranks, President Boko commended the two commanders for their courage, discipline, and lifelong devotion to national service. He said their appointment reflects their exceptional commitment to protecting Botswana’s sovereignty and ensuring the safety of its people.

“The mandate they carry now is a supreme one of defending Botswana’s sovereignty and guaranteeing the nation’s safety,” President Boko said. “What has been bestowed upon them, they truly deserve.”

The President highlighted that this moment is significant in Botswana’s military history, as it marks the first time the BDF will be led by a Four-Star General, with a Lieutenant General serving as Deputy Commander. He described the appointments as a symbol of the country’s continued investment in strong and capable leadership within the armed forces.

President Boko reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the BDF, noting that the government is taking active steps to improve operational capacity. He acknowledged ongoing challenges, including shortages of equipment and proper attire for soldiers, and pledged that addressing these issues remains a national priority. “The BDF must be equipped to meet modern security demands,” he said. “We are committed to ensuring that our forces have the resources, tools, and support they need to fulfill their mission.”

The appointment of General Mophuting and Lieutenant General Seelo is expected to bring renewed focus to military modernization and defense readiness. Both officers have decades of service experience and are respected for their leadership in advancing the professionalism and strategic capabilities of the BDF.

The ceremony reaffirmed the central role of the Botswana Defence Force in safeguarding national stability and contributing to peace and security in the Southern African region. With new leadership in place, the government aims to strengthen defense structures, enhance operational efficiency, and reinforce Botswana’s commitment to regional and international peacekeeping efforts.
