Africa-Press – Botswana. President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has implored farmers to take advantage of the artificial insemination initiative to improve quality of their breed and consequently increase the national herd.
President Masisi said this when gifting a Metsimaswaane farmer Mr Moeletsi Moeletsi with a Simbra bull.
He encouraged Mr Moeletsi to tap into the expertise of established artificial insemination camps and set up his own so as to assist other farmers in the area and maximise outputs and profits.
President Masisi said farming especially the cattle industry had potential for economic growth.
As a champion of the Vision 2036, Dr Masisi said he was inspired to help every Motswana to succeed and be wealthy.
Moreover, President Masisi said he had aspirations to close the gap between the haves and the have nots supported by pillars Vision 2036 which envisioned- transformation to a high-income country.
In accepting the gift Mr Moeletsi said he was lost for words for such a warm-hearted present.
He thanked President Masisi for the good gesture and promised to grow the breed and assist others enhance their breed quality.
For his part Minister of Agriculture Mr Fidelis Molao encouraged farmers to take care of their livestock, register them and keep records.
This, he said was a prerequisite for lucrative export market and also important in livestock management.
He also encouraged Mr Moeletsi to take advantage of the Ramatlabama Artificial Insemination camp which imparted the required knowledge and skills on improving quality breed.
Mr Moeletsi started cattle farming in 1983. He was a public transport driver and managed to use the earnings from the mini-bus to buy cattle.
He started farming in Maephatlele in Kweneng district and experienced high mortality due to mogau weed, he then relocated to Metsimaswaane.
