Africa-Press – Botswana. President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi on Thursday, led Members of Parliament to sign a book of condolences for late Namibia President, Dr Hage Geingob at the High Commission of Namibia in Gaborone.

The occasion took place in the presence of Namibia High Commissioner to Botswana, Mr Asser Kuveri Kapere.

Vice President Slumber Tsogwane was among attendees and so was Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr Lemogang Kwape, who later described Dr Geingob as a beacon of Pan Africanism, the qualities that prompted President Masisi and legislators to join Namibians in grief and assure them of their support during their time of need.

“We are here today, as leaders and people’s representatives, as well as members of the ruling party, to convey our condolences in honour and memory of the late President Geingob.

We are not here to cry, but celebrate the life of a true statesman,” said Dr Kwape.

He said President Masisi and President Geingob were bosom friends and could only imagine how President Masisi was feeling because the person he regarded as a brother was no more.

What they shared was more of a brotherly bond, Dr Kwape said and added that Dr Geingob would be remembered for his contribution and promotion of solid bilateral relations, not only between Botswana and Namibia, but with other African countries.

He said Botswana and Namibia would continue to maintain and strengthen cordial relations that had existed over the years and was also evident through a strong relationship between Botswana Democratic Party and SWAPO, since inception.

Dr Kwape said President Geingob valued ties between Botswana and Namibia, as well as the support and commitment in building the two countries’ steadfast friendship and cooperation.

President Geingob, who died in Windhoek February 4, is expected to be laid to rest on Sunday. He was aged 82.
