Africa-Press – Botswana. The government, as custodian of the rights of the people they lead, shoulders the responsibility to ensure such liberties are upheld and enforced to the latter.

President Advocate Duma Boko, whose governance is firmly rooted in safeguarding and promoting human rights for all, reiterated this commitment during a meet-and-greet session with Batswana living in Zambia on Friday.

This session took place on the sidelines of the just-concluded inaugural African Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Digital Trade forum.

“These rights are fundamental and inherent to you as human beings. You don’t have to beg anyone to have these rights observed and respected,” he said, adding that rights were also indivisible and interdependent and should thus be rendered in their entirety.

President Boko assured Batswana, who attended the session in droves at the Botswana High Commission in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, that, other than being the head of state of Botswana, he was duty-bound as an Advocate by profession to defend, protect, and fight for the rights of fellow citizens and human beings.

To this end, he said ordinary citizens are at liberty to hold the powers that be accountable in the event of erosion of these fundamental rights.

President Boko conveyed to all present that his government was eager to have Batswana from all walks of life contribute their ideas for the common good.

He said time was of the essence, as his government was in a hurry to improve the well being of the citizens in three years.

President Boko advised young people to come on board, dare to dream again to become the best versions of themselves despite opposition and assured them of his administration’s support.

“You are digital natives; you occupy the space, and that is why we need to digitise rapidly and go the e-learning route because you are ready,” he said to the appreciation of the majority of young Batswana who attended the meeting.

Also, President Boko implored Batswana living in Zambia to be on their best behaviour and work hard, knowing full well that they were ambassadors of their country.

Minister for International Relations, Dr Phenyo Butale said President Boko’s courtesy call on Batswana was part of the new administration’s diaspora engagement strategy. For Botswana’s vision of prosperity for all to gain traction, Dr Butale said Batswana in all corners of the globe, including those living in Zambia, needed to come to the party.

Dr Nametso Setilo, a Motswana living in Zambia, commended President Boko and his administration for bringing a ray of hope to the nation.

She stated that the youth, in particular, drew much inspiration from the agile and forward-looking government. Batswana living in Zambia, she said, were more than willing to work hand in hand with the government and take Botswana to greater heights.
