Africa-Press – Botswana. Practising healthy lifestyle and habits is not only a plus in physical and mental wellness, but aids in combating non communicable diseases, which are rife within communities.

Healthy lifestyle enhances social wellbeing at all levels such as saving money, improving optimal functioning of the body, mind and soul, and is key to productivity.

MP for Kgatleng East, Mr Mabuse Pule said this when addressing residents during the Kgatleng Tribal Administration’s wellness event at Mabalane on July 28.

“Whatever we do or not do should always be preceded by the question, ‘does it improves our wellbeing and that of the people we live with’?”

In that regard, he called for promotion of healthy eating, exercise, and rest as the main ingredients to longevity, increased and productivity.

Deputy kgosi of Bakgatla, Kgosi Bana Sekai encouraged men to seek medical attention when need arose, noting that most men were secretive about their health status.

He expressed concern that the silent crisis in men’s health was shortening the life spans of fathers, husbands, brothers and sons.

“I urge you to see ba bongaka borra fa le sa ikutlwe sentle,” literally meaning men should not shy away from seeking medical attention.

Mmathubudukwane Kgosi Thari Balebetse urged the residents to eat right and drink more water rather than soft drinks, as such could reduce risks of diseases stemming from poor eating habits.

“Eat nutritiously, stay hydrated, take supplements and get plenty of rest to enable the body to repair itself,” he said.

Cllr of Mabalene, Seth Sekate encouraged attendants to use the health applications on their mobile phones to track their wellbeing.

Heappreciated the wellness day for promoting of exchange of information and knowledge, adding that wellness programmes could safe many people who lacked information on health issues.

Meanwhile, Mmathubudukwane police acting station commander, Ms Boikhutso Modise decried some ill practices that may affect the wellbeing of residents such as high number of house break-ins, stock theft, rape and defilement, which she said were rife among the communities in Kgatleng East.

She called on members of the public to join hands with the police and fight crime.

Kgatleng Tribal Administration secretary, Ms Ketlaetso Ndebele said her office organised the event to sensitise residents on wellness programmes.

She said the wellness committees from Bokaa, Oodi, Artesia Mochudi and Mmathubudukwane clusters had organised build-up activities to raise money for the event.

She said the committee had been instrumental in caring for ailing staff members.

Ms Ndebele encouraged staff members to host more wellness activities within the workplace.
