Africa-Press – Botswana. Bonno National Housing Programme (BNHP) is strategically aligned with Botswana’s national development objectives, as highlighted by the Minister of Water and Human Settlement, Mr Onnetse Ramogapi, during a press conference on Tuesday.

Minister Ramogapi emphasized that the development objectives are outlined in Vision 2036, the National Development Plan (NDP) 11, and the forthcoming NDP 12, in addition to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals One and Eleven.

The housing programme is designed to tackle the nation’s pressing housing shortage, promote social equity, and foster economic growth.

“The programme aims to enhance the living standards of Batswana, reduce financial stress on low-income households, and support sustainable urbanisation through resilient housing solutions and improved access to basic services,” said Mr Ramogapi.

Further, he said that Bonno housing programme was set to transform the lives of citizens saying, “Bonno National Housing Programme goes beyond just building houses, it’s about building communities. It’s about creating homes that provide a sense of pride and a foundation for the future.”

The minister said government was commitment to providing Batswana with homes that reflected the nation’s rich cultural heritage while embracing the aspirations of a modern and progressive society.

He noted that the programme served as an overarching initiative that delivered various housing schemes, including the Integrated Poverty Alleviation and Housing Scheme, specifically designed for individuals in informal employment.

Among the schemes included are social housing options, such as the Destitute Housing Programme, Bonno Turnkey Housing Scheme, and Bonno Home Loan Improvement Scheme, alongside Bonno housing support for those earning a D4 salary or equivalent.

The programme also features rent-to-buy options facilitated by the Botswana Housing Corporation and private developers, as well as district and institutional housing.

“Going forward, we are considering a targeted scheme to assist those affected in accessing housing for ownership,” Mr Ramogapi said

He highlighted that inclusivity was a core aspect of the programme, aiming to broaden access to housing so that all citizens, regardless of their income levels, can benefit from the initiatives.
