Africa-Press – Botswana. Chairperson of the newly established Ramotswa District Council, Mr Zaahid Jalal, has promised to ensure that envisaged programmes and projects are implemented.
Speaking after being endorsed as the first council chairperson, Mr Jalal, whose term coincides with the Transitional National Development Plan (TNDP), said he was charged with ensuring that all stakeholders played a part in the development process.
Mr Jalal said the upgrading of the subordinate authorities into fully fledged district councils was a positive step towards decentralisation of services, which would also allow the fast tracking of the pace at which things were done.
“I know we are all eager to leave a tangible mark in what is left of our term in office.
Moreover the restructuring of councils along with the recent changes towards government procurement processes should also provide an impetus for improved implementation and monitoring of our initiatives,” he said.
Mr Jalal said the changes formed part of government’s transformation plan, which actualised President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi’s Reset Agenda.
“What we are experiencing is a step towards the realisation of the transformation plan’s first objective, which is to reorganise the ministry for improved performance.
Through our collective efforts and support, the next phase of this dynamic plan will see digital transformation of the ministry used to build efficient services and infrastructure, sustainable local economies and responsive social protection,” he added.
Mr Jalal, who is also Ramotswa’s Kgosing ward councillor, appealed to councillors to ensure that the establishment of the district council catapulted their desire to better serve Batswana.
He said the area had great untapped economic potential and was honoured to be afforded an opportunity to play a part in the development of the region.
For her part, newly elected council vice chairperson, Ms Maria Motshwaedi said their mandate, as the new authority, was to develop Motswana.
She said collective efforts from all stakeholders could make their job easier.
Ms Motshwaedi, who is councillor for Magopane ward, said their efforts could not exist without challenges such as roads infrastructure development.
She appealed to councillors to rally behind efforts to complete constituency community projects, which were already budgeted for.
