Africa-Press – Botswana. Batswana are encouraged to regularly have their eyes checked, even if they are not experiencing any issues.

In an interview with Dr Christopher Nyanga, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Health, emphasised the importance of undergoing eye checks every two years, wearing sunglasses and following treatment recommendations.

Dr Nyanga highlighted common eye conditions that particularly affect the elderly, including cataracts, glaucoma, and Diabetic Retinopathy (a complication of uncontrolled diabetes).

He said while glaucoma often runs in families, cataracts are primarily age-related, and diabetic retinopathy is a result of uncontrolled diabetes.

Dr Nyanga stressed the necessity of regular eye examinations to detect these conditions early on for effective treatment.

Furthermore, he said there was no outbreak of Pink Eye in the country. Pink eye, as he explained, is an inflammation of the structures of the eye’s front part (the transparent membrane lining the eyelid and eyeball). He noted that it could be caused by allergens, irritants, bacteria, and viruses, presenting symptoms such as itchy, red, teary eyes, occasional pain, and mild swelling of the eyelids.

Dr Nyanga suggested that practicing basic hygiene measures, including refraining from sharing face towels, frequent hand washing, and avoiding allergens, could help prevent the spread of pink eye.

He said it was important to seek medical help promptly, as pink eye could be contagious. Early diagnosis and certain precautions were essential in controlling its spread.

He said the ministry was engaging with the community through various media platforms, wellness programmes and health education sessions in hospitals.
