Africa-Press – Botswana. Resealing of the Tsabong-Middlepits road stretch is progressing well despite challenges of scarce bitumen.

Speaking in an interview on Thursday, Limousine construction company site agent, Mr Trevor Kgafela said the P34 million road maintenance project stood at 75 per cent completion state. The site was handed on February 2, 2022 to reseal, patch potholes and mark Tsabong-Middlepits road.

The project was supposed to be completed and handed over in February this year.

However, it was delayed due to shortage of bitumen attributed to the effects of Russia and Ukraine war.“The war between Russia and Ukraine delayed progress.

Bitumen is a by-product of oil refineries and it is used to produce asphalt for road surfacing.

We therefore received it in limited quantities.

Also, we could spend two months without bitumen and this has caused the delay,” said Mr Kgafela.

He said the 80-kilometre road stretch project was among road network development projects earmarked for Tsabong District for completion in the 2022/2023 financial year.

Mr Kgafela, however, said his team was still left with resealing the bus bays and making road markings to complete the project.

“We expect to complete the works in two weeks depending on the availability of material,” he said.Mr Kgafela said the project employed 17 Tsabong community members.

He said the total number of employees were 32 and locals had been engaged in higher positions as a skills transfer initiative.
