Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana Police Service (BPS) has expressed a deep concern over the alarming increase in cases of obtaining by false pretenses. People who obtain by false pretences also known as swindlers or fraudsters use deception to deprive victims of their money or possessions.
In an interview, the SSKA police station commander, Superintendent Mmoloke Sebako, highlighted the prevalence of this criminal activity and the impact it has on the victims. According to Superintendent Sebako, the police have been dealing with numerous cases of obtaining by false pretenses, and the trend shows no signs of abating. He emphasized that the fraudulent activities often result in significant financial losses for the victims.
“The impact of obtaining by false pretenses extends beyond financial losses, as victims often experience emotional distress and a sense of betrayal upon realizing they have been deceived,” said Sebako. The superintendent underscored the fact that perpetrators who obtaining by false pretenses frequently target women, exploiting their trust and vulnerability.
In response to the escalating threat, Sebako said the police have intensified their efforts to address and prevent instances of obtaining by false pretenses. Furthermore, Superintendent Sebako emphasised the need for ongoing education and outreach to equip the public with the knowledge and tools to identify and avoid attempts of obtaining by false pretenses.
“By empowering individuals with the necessary information and resources, the police seek to create a more resilient and informed community that is better equipped to safeguard against fraudulent activities,” added Sebako Superintendent Sebako also says the rising cases of obtaining by false pretenses underscore the urgent need for heightened awareness, vigilance, and community collaboration. “As the police continue their efforts to address this pressing issue, the public is urged to remain alert and proactive in preventing and reporting instances of obtaining by false pretenses,” Sebako alluded.
