Africa-Press – Botswana. The newly established Okavango District Council has elected Mr Gaopalelwe Ronald as its chairperson deputised by Mr Mpoke Karapo.

Mr Ronald won with 10 votes against eight for Mr Lesedi Boy who is the former Okavango Sub-district Council chairperson.

Mr Karapo won against Mr Lelejwang Sokwe through the toss of a coin after they had tied with nine votes each.

Mr Ronald said he would prioritise projects such as roads in the district by ensuring that authentic companies were appointed.

He also said the upgrading of Okavango to a full district would help in speedy decision-making and the availability of funds since they would no longer be split with the North West District Council.

Mr Karapo said they had to deliver as they were now a fully-fledged district, which status should improve service delivery.

The council’s acting secretary, Ms Iris Sitayelo said the elections of the leadership and other structures and committees went smoothly.

Ms Sitayelo also noted that councillors accepted coin tossing outcome.
