Africa-Press – Botswana. Sixteen-year-old Same Thani from St Joseph’s College has posited an exceptional performance as she bagged two medals at the ongoing Region Five Youth Games in Windhoek, Namibia, which runs from July 5 to 13.

In an interview on Thursday, Same, who has been practicing karate for 11 years, expressed excitement after securing a gold medal in the team kata category.

Following success in team kata, Same progressed to win a bronze medal in the kumite category. Though she lost in the semi-final to her Angolan opponent, she had previously secured a victory against Zimbabwe in her first kumite match.

Currently, training at the Village Garrison in the Botswana Defence Force barracks, Same believed that given the right opportunities, she could achieve significant success through karate.

She encouraged her fellow young Batswana to dedicate time to sports and to remain resilient in the face of challenges.

Same also thanked her coach, Sensei Goitseone Koosaletse, for their support during the Region Five Youth Games.

Former National Karate Athlete Baone More, a first dan black belt and ex-member of the Botswana National Karate team, praised the dedication and rigorous training that team kata represented.

More elaborated that team kata consisted of three individuals demonstrating synchronised movements with utmost precision, requiring excellent listening skills and keen observation.

She noted that kata final typically demanded complete silence to allow athletes to concentrate fully, using peripheral vision without moving their heads or eyes.

She acknowledged that Same was at a pivotal point in her karate career.

More congratulated Same on her stellar achievements and encouraged her to continue persevering to reach even greater heights in the sport of karate.
