Africa-Press – Botswana. Councillor Gabagopole Sebele of the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) has been elected Central District Council chairperson, deputised by nominated councillor, Mr Baemedi Medupi of Tonota.

The elections took place in Serowe on Tuesday and four sub-district councils attended after the CDC was sub-divided.

Boteti, Mahalapye and Tutume were recently declared fully-fledged districts.

Councillor Sebele defeated Councillor Nametso Senku of Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) with 50 votes against 32.

There were eight spoiled votes in the chairmanship ballot.

All in all ninety councillors voted during the elections.

Councillor Medupi amassed 43 votes to claim the deputy chairperson seat while Councillor Gaefele Sedombo of Umbrella for Democratic Change secured 42 votes.

There were five spoiled votes.

In his acceptance speech, Councillor Sebele said he would work with all councillors across the political divide in order to bring developments to the district.

He thanked fellow councillors for entrusting him with the responsibility of leading them.

He emphasised the importance of unity, saying it was key to bringing services to the people.

“I promise to lead this council with respect and hope the value will filter down to all of us for effective service delivery,” he said.

Mr Sebele urged councillors to work hand in hand with civil servants to deliver services to the people.

He commended the outgoing council chairperson and her deputy for diligently leading the district in the past.

His deputy, Mr Medupi thanked those who voted for him and promised to work cooperatively with his fellow councillors.
