Africa-Press – Botswana. The staff of state owned enterprises and the Ministry of Finance have been urged to embrace innovation as they strive to improve service delivery.
Speaking at the beginning of a two-day leadership forum in Molepolole yesterday, the Minister of Finance, Ms Peggy Serame reminded employees under her ministry that they were at the core of Botswana’s economic development.
She said it was therefore important for each of them to introspect on their role in economic transformation.
The forum was held under the theme; Innovation for Economic Transformation and Growth.
Minister Serame said the ministry faced various challenges, such as monitoring the effectiveness of public spending.
“Do we follow the money?” she asked saying her ministry usually allocated funds to different ministries but did not follow up to ensure that such investment yielded returns.
She asked the participants, who included senior officials in the ministry and chief executive officers of various parastatals, to continuously engage with their stakeholders to ensure they were up to date with the challenges and requirements needed in today’s society.
Ms Serame stated that since the ministry’s 2017-23 strategic plan had come to an end, they should use the opportunity to develop the next plan.
Meanwhile, Ms Serame said she was recognised as Africa’s Finance Minister of the Year 2024 by The Banker magazine due to the good team behind her.
She said this should encourage them further and also act as a foundation on what they built together since 2021.
Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr Olesitse Masimega said the leadership forum was held against a background of notable achievements, amongst them being the minister’s international recognition and the Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) recording one of is best years.
