Ship Ocean Viking rescues 268 migrants in five rescue actions

Africa-Press – Botswana. The humanitarian ship Ocean Viking has rescued 268 people from Thursday to Saturday in five rescue operations for migrants found in overcrowded wooden boats between Libya and Malta, according to a report released yesterday by the organization SOS Méditerranée.

“Many have high levels of exhaustion and dehydration” and “severe sunburn”, detailed the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), which is based in Marseille, in the south of France. Several minors, including unaccompanied children, pregnant women and even a three-week-old baby, are now in the care of SOS Méditerranée and the Red Cross and Red Crescent at Ocean Viking.

On Tuesday, four empty boats were spotted in the area, including one without an engine, but “without communication from maritime authorities, the fate of the people on board remains unknown,” he added. Since the beginning of the year, 1,161 migrants have disappeared in the Mediterranean, including 918 in the Central Mediterranean, the most dangerous migratory route in the world, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
