Africa-Press – Botswana. Gotlhophemang Alone from Takatokwane walked away P20 000 richer on Saturday when his horse, Silver Sky became the champion of the second edition of the Mabutsane District Show Horse Race competition.
Silver Sky, with 25-year old jockey, Gosego Mokgele from Charleshill, won the Thorough Breed category 2 400m followed by After Shock and With My Soul from Banyana Farms and Charleshill respectively.
Silver Sky entered the grand race, which had seven entries in total, following its sterling performance earlier in the 1 600m, giving Highway Star, Tommy Blom and After Shock a run for their money.
In the Tswana Grade 11600m category, Magic Hunter from Ghanzi emerged the winner, followed by Silver Son and Lexington from Maun and Mogobewakgomo respectively.
Flaming Park from Motokwe obtained position one in the Thorough Breed 1 800m category, while Diamond Dust from Kanye and Real Sumit from Lorolwane got second and third positions respectively.
Locknut from Lorolwane secured first position in the Tswana Grade 21 600m category, while Morwamosu’s Ninja Boy and Jack from Mogobewakgomo obtained position two and three respectively.
Meanwhile, Botswana Horse Race Association chairperson, Tymon Kelebeng acknowledged the steady growth of horse racing in Botswana, both in numbers and quality of the races.
He applauded horse owners for their commitment in taking care of the horses and ensuring they participated in various races both nationally and regionally, despite their high maintenance.
He called on the private sector to support the sport to ensure that it continued to grow and unearth its sport tourism potential. He further urged horse race organisers to collaborate with experts in the field to ensure that their venues complied with the set standards for horse racing, to ensure fair and good quality competition.
