South Africa's parliament fire suspect returns to court

Africa-Press – Botswana. The main suspect in South Africa’s parliament fire on the 2nd of January returned to court this Tuesday.

Forty-nine year old Zandile Christmas Mafe was arrested in the complex, in Cape Town, the same day of the blaze making his first court apeearance three days later.

Ahead of the hearing, around 30 people gathered outside the court to demand the suspect is freed.

Since the arrest that debate has raged in the media questioning the suspect’s role in the fire.

A preliminary report said that the fire detection system appeared faulty and had not been serviced since 2017.

The fire started at dawn on January 2nd and devastated parts of the complex including the National Assembly, the roof of which collapsed.
