Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana Tennis Association (BTA) host its National Juniors Championships from (Friday) until Sunday.

The tournament played by under 10 boys and girls and under 18, and some of the players to watch include amongst others, the reigning CAT Under 14 champion, Malak Macheng, Rerotlhe Kganyeng, Camilla Seetso, Angel Chakanyuka and Reene Sebego in the girls category.

In the boys category, Tinashe Phatshwane, Lebone Tlape Rorisang Obuseng and Francesco Brink are some of the players to watch as they have proved themselves overtime as prospects of the future.

In an interview, Kganyeng said that she has been training hard for the tournament and she would do her best.

Having played at the recent CAT under 14, she said she is hopeful that the experience she gained would come in handy.

BTA spokesperson, Tshepang Tlhankane said preparations for hosting the championship had been going on very well.

He said they are expecting a very competitive event although they might be disturbed by the heat wave.

Tlhankane however said they were hoping to come up with a workable plan by at least having matches early before the heat starts getting too much and maybe towards the end of the afternoon when it goes down.

He said the objective of the tournament is to use the players for local ranking, and it would help the association to know how their players fare against each other outside of their international rankings, which depends on how many international tournaments an individual affords to go out and play.

“Some players hardly get a chance to play these ITF ranking tournaments due to financial constraints but are equally good players,” he said.
