Africa-Press – Botswana. The Tonota kgotla has illumination and for other buildings in the compound.

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Talita Monnakgotla, said the illumination provided by external building lights provided sufficient lighting in the compound, including private security guards who watched over the Tonota main kgotla yard.

Member of Parliament for Tonota, Mr Pono Moatlhodi, had asked the minister if there were any plans to illuminate the Tonota kgotla yard and to provide carports at the yard.

He also asked the minister if she was aware that dikgosi a tetlanyo (headmen of arbitration) were not covered by the Bogosi Act, and that the segregation disqualified them from benefits such as pension.

Ms Monnakgotla also said her ministry was unable to build carports at the Tonota Customary Court due to budget constraints. She said the Tonota kgotla had two vehicles which were sufficient enough to facilitate officials and the kgosi to undertake official assignments.

Ms Monnakgotla also said magosi a tetlanyo, known as Boralekgotla, were paid allowances not salaries.

She said they, therefore, did not qualify for benefits such as pensions.

However, she said the Bogosi Act of 2008 was under review and that the issue would be considered in the process.
