In a meeting which was held at the village kgotla on Sunday, different speakers concurred that it is paramount for residents to work together and devise ideas that will develop their village.
This was after the Kgomokasitwa Development Trust chairperson Ms Gaemengwe Goutlwamang informed the gathering about the recent discovery of granite in their village. She explained that the meeting was convened to find ways to best utilise the natural resource for the advancement of their village.
Vice Chancellor of Botswana International University of Science and Technology (BIUST), Professor Otlogetswe Totolo urged the residents to take it upon themselves to develop their village. He said as a small community that was blessed with natural resources, it was important for them to look for partnerships that would lead to the realisation of their dreams.
Professor Totolo urged the community to emulate the Bafokeng tribe in South Africa by acquiring land rights through the village trust, especially in areas where the granite deposits had been found, as well as other sites with tourism potential, and thereafter look for investors.
He asserted that acquisition of land rights would ensure that they negotiate a good deal with potential investors. He implored the community to rally behind the trust.
The Director of Information Services, Ms Maria Leshongwane said residents should be creative and innovative in their thinking, in line with the government’s mindset change initiative.
She pointed out that the starting point was harnessing new forms of communication, and urged them to utilise the internet to for easier communication with fellow villagers who are currently away for various reasons.
Ms Leshongwane encouraged the residents to take advantage of the free internet that is availed countrywide in schools, clinics and dikgotla.
She further urged the residents to work together towards a common goal of formulating ideas that would help to develop their village.
