Jacaranda School, in collaboration with the Francistown School of Chess, recently hosted chess tournament during the Easter holidays, attracting participants from four countries, namely, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and the hosts, Botswana. The event featured various categories, including under 8, under 10, under 13, under 16, and an open section, providing a competitive platform for young chess enthusiasts.
The tournament was not only a showcase of skill but also an excellent opportunity for young players to gain exposure and experience in a competitive environment. Among the standout performers was nine-year-old Jason Selemane, who competed in the under 13 category.
Jason, who secured a silver medal, expressed desire to challenge himself against more experienced players, opting to compete in the under 13 category instead of under 10.
He played six games, winning five and losing just one, which earned him a commendable second place. In the under 10 category, Siyabonga Buhlungu from Zimbabwe captured the bronze medal.
He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the Jacaranda Chess Shutdown Tournament, describing it as a fantastic and engaging competition. Siyabonga noted that he learned valuable lessons during the tournament that he would apply to enhance his skills in future competitions.
Other notable medalists included Kabaso Bwalya from Zambia, who won a gold medal in the open section; Bradley Moyo from Zimbabwe, who took home the silver medal, and Gaolatlhe Motunge from Botswana, who secured the bronze medal in the open section.
The other winners are Shathiso Masocha, who won gold in the under 16 category, Cleopatra Rankwane, who earned gold in the under 13 category, Pelontle Paul, who claimed the gold medal in the under 10 category, and Adelline Moshoboro, who won gold in the under 8 category.
The organiser of the Jacaranda Shutdown Chess Tournament, Grivas Molefe, praised the event’s success, highlighting the cooperation among parents, participants, and school leaders. He noted that the tournament commenced smoothly and concluded without any challenges, contributing to its overall success.
The tournament, sponsored by Jacaranda school not only showcased the talents of young chess players but also fostered companionship and sportsmanship among competitors from the different countries.
